Differences Between Murata's Common GCM, GRT and GRM Series MLCCs

The core differences between Murata's GCM, GRT and GRM series MLCCs lie in AEC-Q200 automotive grade compliance, reliability test levels, application scenarios and quality management systems. The GCM and GRT series are automotive-grade products, while the GRM series is for general consumer use. The three series show distinct stratification in test standards, application positioning and performance parameters.

1. Core Positioning and Automotive Grade Standards

The GCM series complies with the AEC-Q200 automotive grade standard and adheres to the IATF16949 quality management system. It is corely positioned for automotive safety-critical and powertrain systems, such as engine ECUs, ABS and airbag systems.The GRT series also complies with the AEC-Q200 automotive grade standard and follows the ISO9001 quality management system. It is mainly designed for automotive infotainment and comfort systems, like navigation, audio and air conditioning systems, and is not suitable for automotive safety-critical scenarios.The GRM series does not comply with the AEC-Q200 automotive grade standard and abides by the ISO9001 quality management system. It is targeted at consumer electronics and general industrial equipment, such as mobile phones, computers and ordinary instruments.

2. Reliability Test Standards (Key Differences)

For the humidity bias test, both the GCM and GRT series undergo the test under the conditions of 85℃, 80-85%RH for 1000 hours, while the GRM series is tested at 40℃, 90-95%RH for 500 hours.In terms of temperature cycle testing, the GCM and GRT series both require 1000 full-temperature range cycles. In addition, GRT series products with a 125℃ rating need additional testing, and the GRM series only needs to complete 5 cycles.Regarding the maximum operating temperature, the GCM series can reach 150℃, suitable for harsh high-temperature environments such as engine compartments; the GRT series has ratings of 125℃ (Grade2), 105℃ and 85℃ (Grade3); the GRM series is generally rated at 125℃ without high-temperature enhanced test requirements for automotive grade.

3. Performance and Application Boundaries

  1. The GCM series is specially designed for automotive safety-critical scenarios, featuring high vibration resistance, high temperature resistance, low ESR and high Q factor. It has excellent pulse response and high-frequency noise reduction capabilities, suitable for 12V/24V on-board power supplies and DC-DC conversion scenarios, and can withstand harsh working environments such as engine compartments, with a relatively high product price.
  2. The GRT series is developed for automotive non-safety systems, with performance falling between the GCM and GRM series. It meets the basic reliability requirements of automotive grade but cannot be applied to automotive safety-critical scenarios. Its product price is lower than the GCM series and higher than the GRM series.
  3. The GRM series is a general-purpose MLCC, with a size range of 0.25×0.125mm to 5.7×5mm, a capacitance range of 0.1pF to 330μF and a voltage range of 2V to 3150V. It has good high-frequency characteristics and anti-interference capabilities, with a high cost performance ratio. It is widely used in consumer electronics and general industrial fields and is not suitable for automotive grade core scenarios.

4. Selection Suggestions

For automotive safety/powertrain systems, the GCM series is a must-choice, which meets the stringent requirements of the IATF16949 quality management system and AEC-Q200 Grade0/1.For automotive infotainment/comfort systems, the GRT series is optional, which balances cost and automotive grade reliability. Note that it should not be misused in automotive safety-critical scenarios.For consumer electronics and general industrial fields, the GRM series is sufficient, which offers the optimal cost and fully covers conventional application requirements.
